What a National Service posting actually involves

National Service is a full year of your working life, and most people arrive knowing only the rumours. Here is the shape of it, from registration to the certificate.

Registration and posting

You register online in the window announced for your year group, using details that must match your school records exactly. A mismatch between the name on your degree and the name in the portal is the single most common reason a posting stalls, so check it character by character before you submit.

You are asked for preferences. Treat them as preferences: the scheme places personnel where institutions have requested them, and demand is not spread evenly across the ten-plus regions. Health, education and local government take the largest numbers, so a science or education graduate has a fair idea where they are heading; other disciplines are placed more broadly.

Reporting to your user agency

Your posting letter names a user agency. a school, hospital, ministry, district assembly, or an approved private organisation. You report to it in person, hand over your letter, and are assigned a supervisor. Endorsement of your arrival is what starts your record for the year, and nothing else can begin until it is done.

Before you travel, ask two practical questions: where you will sleep, and how you will get to work. Some agencies provide accommodation or a hostel arrangement; many do not. Budget for a room, transport and food from your own pocket for the first month, because the allowance does not arrive on your first day.

What the work is actually like

It varies enormously, and that is the honest answer.

• Schools are the most structured. You will teach, mark, and often be handed a class of your own within days.
• Hospitals and clinics place you where the shortage is. Expect shift work and real responsibility.
• Ministries, agencies and district assemblies range from a desk with a full workload to a desk with very little. If it is the second, ask your supervisor for a project. A year of doing nothing is a year you cannot put on a CV.
• Private organisations approved as user agencies often give the most transferable experience, and are the most likely to hire you afterwards.

Money, and the monthly routine

You receive a monthly allowance, set nationally and reviewed most years. It is not a salary and will not cover a comfortable life in Accra; personnel outside the big cities generally find it stretches further. Payment depends on your monthly validation being submitted on time, so learn the routine in your first week and never miss it.

Your bank details and your Ghana Card need to be correct and consistent everywhere they appear. Fixing a mismatch takes weeks during which nothing is paid.

Leave, transfers and problems

Reposting is possible, but only for reasons the scheme recognises. a documented medical condition, or a genuine institutional error. It is not a route to a preferred city.

If something serious goes wrong at your agency, raise it with your supervisor first, then with your district or regional office, and keep your own written record of dates and names. Personnel who document early are the ones whose cases get resolved.

Making the year count

The certificate at the end is required for a lot of formal employment, so complete the year properly. But the certificate is the minimum return. What actually changes your prospects is arriving with a plan:

1. Learn one system your agency depends on well enough to teach it.
2. Write down what you produce each month, with numbers. That becomes your CV.
3. Ask your supervisor in month nine, directly, whether a role exists for you.

Roughly speaking, the people who get hired at the end are the ones who made themselves the obvious answer to a problem their office already had.

While you are serving, keep an eye on what is being advertised. National Service placements and graduate roles move quickly, and applying with a service year behind you is a very different conversation.
